WHAT IS A TRICHIASIS?

Trichiasis is a condition where the eyelashes grow inward towards the eye, causing irritation, redness, and sensitivity to light. This can be due to infections, chronic inflammation, or injury to the eye, and may also occur as a complication of certain medical conditions. Common symptoms include discomfort, redness, tearing, grittiness, and frequent blinking or rubbing of the eye. Trichiasis can be difficult to diagnose as the ingrown eyelashes may not be visible during a routine eye exam. Left untreated, trichiasis can cause damage to the cornea and vision problems.

Treatment Options

There are several treatment options available for trichiasis, including:

  • Removal of ingrown eyelashes by an eye doctor

  • Laser therapy to destroy the hair follicles and prevent future growth

  • Surgery to reposition the eyelid and prevent further ingrown lashes

  • Antibiotic ointments or drops to treat underlying infections or inflammation

The best treatment for trichiasis depends on the severity and underlying cause of the condition, and it's important to seek medical attention promptly to prevent complications and improve the chances of successful treatment.
